Unimaginably Wonderful Benefits of Recycling

Benefit of recycling a ton of plastic
Around 75% of our household trash can be recycled. The concept of recycling can bring about very large environmental and economic benefits. Reprocessing of everything can reduce our carbon footprint.
Everyone is familiar with the three 'R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. But does every citizen follow it religiously? The relationship between environmentally aware citizens and a balanced ecosystem is direct. With the rising concern about global warming and climate change, recycling has gained a lot of importance. Here are some advantages of recycling different types of material.
Plastic

❖ According to the Stanford University PSSI Recycling Center, if you recycle 1 ton of plastic, it saves up to 5,774 kilowatt-hours of energy.

❖ A study by the Harvard University shows that one of the most important benefits of plastic recycling is that it increases the shelf life of landfills, which have been predicted to become exhausted in around 20 years time.

❖ The most prominent benefit of recycling plastic is that it reduces the amount of metals required for its production.
❖ Plastic is manufactured from derivatives of crude oil. A Stanford Recycling Center study states that recycling 1 ton of plastic bottles saves 16.3 barrels of oil.
Glass

❖ The prime benefit is that glass is 100% recyclable, and can be recycled easily without any loss in its quality.

❖ Cullet, also called recycled glass, is used by glass manufactures on a large scale. Using cullet not only saves energy, but also reduces the manufacturing cost.

❖ By using cullet, the raw materials such as soda, limestone, and soda ash are conserved, and CO2 emissions are also cut down.
❖ A study by the Harvard University shows that one of the most important benefits of plastic recycling is that it increases the shelf life of landfills, which have been predicted to become exhausted in around 20 years time.
Paper

❖ The usage of recycled paper reduces the amount of water, virgin paper, chemicals, and eventually the energy required in manufacturing it.

❖ Less manufacturing process means less air pollution. According to Environmental Paper Network, for every 800 pounds of copy paper, it reduces the particulates by 2 pounds, and hazardous air pollutants by 1 pound.
❖ If paper is regarded as waste, it goes into the landfills, and once it starts decomposing, it releases methane gas. The Environmental Protection Agency states that this greenhouse gas is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.
Metal

❖ Like the others, the reuse of metal also saves a large amount of energy by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. Roughly 90% of energy is saved if you recycle aluminum, instead of extracting it from a virgin ore.

❖ Metal recycling helps in conservation of natural resources such as metal ores. As per the study of City of San Diego Environmental Services Department, if you recycle one pound of aluminum, it saves around 4 pounds of bauxite ore.
❖ The Study of Massachusetts Recycling Coalition shows that 1,400 pounds of coal, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, and 120 pounds of limestone are saved, if 1 ton of steel is recycled.

❖ Most aluminum companies would benefit with the concept of recycling, as they can save approximately 19 million barrels of oil. This itself can give enough energy to supply electricity to about 18 million households for a period of one year!
E-Waste
recycle e-waste
❖ Along with conserving energy, e-waste recycles natural resources such as copper, silver, and aluminum.

❖ A significant amount of air pollution is caused when electronic goods are freshly made from virgin material. The used products are then discarded and make their way to landfills, possibly poisoning the soil if the appliances are dominated by lead mercury and other chemicals. Recycling e-waste, thus helps in the reduction of pollution of air, water, and soil.
An ideal situation would be when every individual realizes his/her own responsibility, and practices the concept of recycling. Then one can certainly have good hope for the future of this planet. Besides, recycling also creates job opportunities for many people, which is all for a good cause. The benefits are many more to name, but to actually use these concepts in our everyday life would require awareness and also the urge to spread this message. Therefore, whenever you can, just spread the word! Recycling will benefit everybody around the globe, including you.
